FAQ: Lazlo - the pen, redefined
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

Where does the name come from?

The name LAZLO comes from László Bíró, the inventor of the first commercially successful modern ballpoint pen. Not only does LAZLO pay homage to the creator’s name, it also pays homage to the product he created as it uses ballpoint refills.

We have been heavily inspired by Bíró’s innovation and how this has changed the world. Nonetheless, we recognise that many ballpoint pens use plastics in their construction. We have taken Bíró’s concept to a new level by attempting to elevate the ballpoint experience to a new standard.

Which pen cartridges will it take?

Each purchase of LAZLO will come with a black ink Schmidt MegaLine ballpoint refill. These are a very well regarded insert amongst Pen aficionados because of the consistency of the ink and the quality of the cartridge. They are widely accessible and are sold across the world too.

Aside from the Schmidt refills, LAZLO is also compatible with most of your favourite Euro Style Inserts. This will allow users to use Lazlo with both rollerball and Gel inserts if preferred. Here are a selection of successfully tested inserts which are compatible:

Waterman Roller Pointe 109 Caran D’Ache Fibre 8128.009 Schmidt Fineliner 6040 OHTO Ceramic Roller C-305 Pilot LG2RF-SF/BLS-G2-7 Schmidt Ceramic Safety Roller 888 Kaweco Euro Ceramic Roller Schmidt Megaline 4889 Fisher Space Pen

Please leave us a comment or drop us a message if you would like us to check a specific pen insert for you.

This list is updated as more cartridges are tested. Visit this site to see alternative inserts:

What are the differences/benefits between Aluminium and Brass?

The main differences between the Aluminium and Brass are aesthetic, textural and in weight/feel in your hand.

The aluminium Lazlo (40g) has a silver finish, which is first sandblasted and then anodised. This means that it has a consistent matt texture that is very hard wearing and will not change with use.

The brass Lazlo (65g) has a brushed finish, which is brushed horizontally as it is turned on the lathe. The finish is consistent and smooth, but will patina with time and use. Once patinated, it can be polished back to a shiny finish with a small amount of Brasso and elbow grease.

Some backers will prefer a lighter pen, whilst others will prefer a heavier pen, it really depends on personal preference.

How do the magnets work?

The mechanism uses two diametrically magnetised magnets which are magnetised across the diameter.

As they are oriented axially this means that when the cap containing the top magnet is twisted the magnet in the cap exerts both a radial (twisting) force and an axial force on the opposing magnet. This pushes the pen insert out and is locked in place by a slot. When the magnet cap is twisted further the polarity switches and the pen cartridge is pulled back.

The mechanism is “sprung” in both directions i.e. both when extending and retracting the pen. Besides doing away with springs which will eventually wear out the mechanism creates an unparalleled satisfying click that you will never get tired of.

How will the campaign be fulfilled?

Once the production is complete we will freight the pens to our three warehouses which will then ship out Lazlo’s to backers. All backers will receive a shipping notification and tracking number once the items have been handed over to the postal service.

These warehouses are located in United Kingdom (supplying United Kingdom and ROTW backers), Canada (supplying North American backers), and Netherlands (supplying European Backers).

We have decided to distribute fulfillment as this scan speed up the process of receiving the items, reduce the carbon footprint of a pledge and importantly reduce the shipping cost for backers.

Backers in USA, Canada, United Kingdom and EU will not required to pay to release the goods from customs. However, depending on customs and duties rules of your shipping country, you may be required by customs to pay extra fees to release the pens.

We cannot advise or comment on how much this will be but will be wholeheartedly helping once the campaign reaches this stage.

As a side note to our European backers, we recognise that previous campaigns were fulfilled to EU from United Kingdom and their were difficulties receiving rewards because of Brexit. We have taken these insights on board and are really pleased to offer fulfillment from inside Europe which will avoid these issues.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
